Q: My "grassland" plant died over winter — was it the wrong type? Check the Grassland Type column. Temperate-type grasses/flowers expect cold dormancy; savanna species (elephant grass, acacia) are frost-intolerant and will die back or die outright below ~0°C (32°F).
Q: Why isn't my grass regrowing after mowing/grazing like the article says it should? Regrowth-from-base only works for species with genuinely low growing points (buffalo grass, ryegrass, star grass). Bunchgrasses and taller prairie grasses (big bluestem, switchgrass) regenerate from root reserves instead — expect slower visible regrowth, not none.
Q: Which of these tolerate the most neglect (low water, poor soil)? Filter the Drought Tolerance column for "High" or "Very High": baobab, mesquite, spinifex, blue grama, buffalo grass, prairie clover.
Q: Can I mix savanna and temperate species in one planting? Generally no — savanna species need warm winters and tolerate fire/dry-season dormancy; temperate species need a cold dormancy trigger. Cross-planting usually kills one or the other within a year or two.
Q: What's the fastest-establishing option for erosion control? Ryegrass and star grass establish fastest (weeks, not seasons) but have lower drought/fire tolerance — good short-term fix, not a permanent solution.
